Seminars 2024

Saturday workshops

Fight like the Witchers : School of the Wolf

Robert Waschka

The most famous witcher style thanks to the fictional character Geralt the White wolf. We will try out spatial work with the monster, spins, a little magic. Real techniques derived from HEMA and orient.

Long Sword - staging of historical techniques for theatrical and film purposes

BladeBros Crew - Jan Balicz and Petr Šišma

In the first part, we will discuss basic longsword techniques and reactions to hits. In the second part, we deal with more complex techniques according to the level of the participants and the following assaultos.

Daggers accoring to the Wallerstein codex

Vojtěch Vrobel

A specific compendium of medieval swordsmanship texts known as Wallerstein contains a short, and somewhat overlooked, section on dagger combat. Let's take a look at it together and go through a bunch of beautifully cunning and elegant ways to get a short blade into an enemy. The teaching will also focus on the functionality and applicability of this learning also in today's practice with knives.

Play of the Axe

Kryštof Šámal

Interpretation of several selected techniques of combat in armor with a poleaxe from the manuscript La Jeu de La Hache. It serves as an introduction to the topic, we will discuss terminology, some basic techniques and some connected ones. Armor is not required for the seminar, our own poleaxe would be useful but it can be lend to you at prior request.

Italian rapier

Martin Tureček

At this seminar, we will discuss bending of the body connected with two principles of working with energy - diversion and release.

How to improve footwork with fencing techniques

Richard Pokorný - Cyrano's Academy

The seminar is devoted to general principles in teaching basic foot movements in fencing. Using specific exercises used in sport fencing training, the instructor will show how to improve your stance, to perfect your lunge and gain confidence in your movements. All exercises are designed to be applicable to any fencer of any specialization and level.

Medieval battle formations, tactics and use of weapons with different ranges: spears, throwing spears, sword and shield, scabbard.

Vit Hrachový "Hark"

- The purpose of formations is to gain an advantage that will allow you to defeat an enemy depite being outnumbered.

- They work to acquire or limit the range of soldiers, adapt to the terrain and the arming of both sides.

Formation:

- Loose and dense row

- Mill wheel - rounded corners

- Wedge - for cutting wings

- The Psalmist

Tactics and Games:

- Bypass - wolf packs

- Strong wing - spear

- Strong center - dense row

- Left wing attack/right wing retreat

The teacher will supply the tools.

Saber - free fencing with limited material

Kamil Hozák

According to the didactic principle of sequence, we should go from the simple to the more complex, from the general to the specific. This also applies when teaching fencing. We can appropriately add free fencing for each practiced element, and thus go from simple training to more complex training and also add one, two or more variables into the game.

In fifty minutes, we will learn several attacks, covers, changes of positions and counterattacks, which we will gradually include in an exercise, the aim of which will be a varied (and in itself quite fun and motivating for further development) "free fencing with limited substance" in terms of technical and mental work ".

We will cut each other with sabers 🙂 Fencing mask and saber are required, quilted coat recommended (depends on how heavy is the saber you carry..)

The Art of Hitting and Not Being Hit - A Practical Approach to Fencing

Zdeněk Brýdl

HEMA is an acronym most of the fencing world is familiar with. However, historical European martial arts are a much broader concept than just going to tournaments in a metal armor, which is what most swordsmen understand by this term. Nevertheless, this name makes sense. If I try to reconstruct the old masters, or if I try to compare the approaches of different historical schools, I naturally end up comparing forces during free sparring. However, friendly training does not have the same conditions as a fight for life. The only way to get a little closer to it these days is to organize a tournament where people who don't know each other will gather, trying to prove that their approach is better and thus working under stress in an attempt to avoid getting hit and at the same time plant hits themselves.

With me, you will be able to try an approach that goes a step beyond the fencing approach to learning about fencing schools. An approach where all the knowledge of the old masters is mixed together to create the most effective style for ambitious swordsmen trying to get somewhere.

Free fencing on stage

Jiří Trnka

Tired of repeating the same choreography over and over again? Having trouble remembering it? Don't have time to invent and practice something new?

If you answered yes to at least one question, then this concept is a possible solution for you.

Free fencing on stage - is it possible to fence on stage without pre-rehearsed choreography and is it even a good idea?

Presentation of the approach to training, basic recommendations, possibilities of variations, improvisation, solving collision situations.

The aim of the seminar is to familiarize yourself with the concept in the allotted time and try out a short fight in practice.

For whom: possible use mainly in scenic fencing, but also in an atmospheric LARP, battle reconstruction, film extras. It is advisable to have a basic knowledge of how to technically correctly perform basic actions - cut/thrust/blocking. It is good to register in a pair in which you will practice, but it is not a condition. Bring your preferred weapons to practice with. There will also be some to lend, but please don't count on it. Protective equipment is for the consideration of each participant - what are you used to, or how much you know and trust your partner.
